Movie Review - Thunderball (Bond 4)

Literally drowning in excess!

So now that we've seen the masterpiece that is Goldfinger, what would they follow it up with? Thunderball!

Yeah, this one didn't go quite as well. It feels like they were simply looking for a way to spend a ton of money on this movie and fixated on underwater scenes, which I don't really help this movie out at all. Sure, it doesn't help that they look dated, but trying to do combat underwater? That's a huge mistake. That long scene at the end with the two groups going at it only made me wonder if I was suddenly watching a Disney film from the same time-period. That's how cheesy it seemed to me.

The rest of the film was okay. They had a decent setting, the plot worked fine, and any action above water was decent. However, I really get the feeling that they rushed a lot of stuff on this one. The editing was especially choppy, with characters saying their lines during a screen swipe to another scene! Even the acting was just okay, as if everyone felt tired of the whole thing.

Largo was alright as a villain. He seemed less memorable and interesting than Goldfinger (but then who wouldn't), but the eyepatch certainly helped him look menacing. That being said, it felt like he was one Brooklyn accent away from being a stereotypical gangster (or, given his obsession with sharks, a peg-leg short of being a pirate!). He was only doing villainous things because it was his job (which, as an employee of SPECTRE, isn't untrue, I suppose).

Even Connery isn't quite as into what he's doing as with the other movies. Sure, he gets his playful banter with the villain and some sensuous dialogue with Largo's mistress, but it feels kind of token this time around.

Essentially, it felt like this movie was simply one for making the most of a huge budget by squandering it on some extended underwater fight scenes. Really not much more to say about this one!

Bond films by rank:
  1. Goldfinger
  2. Dr. No
  3. Thunderball
  4. From Russia With Love
