2016 Movies in Review - Part Two

As promised, here is the rest of the movies I've seen this year. Now, to be clear, there are still some 2016 movies that I plan on seeing (such as Rogue One), but don't think I'll get to them until next year. Still, there are plenty of movies to cover, so let's get started!

As promised, here is that 2016 Movies in Review article. However, given the number of movies I saw this year, I’ve had to split it up, so here’s the first part that gets us through about the first half of the year. The next part will cover the rest of the year, and I may do a catch-up article as well, picking up some of the leftovers.

Movies that Impacted My Cinematic Tastes

So I thought I would try to write more about movies here in the upcoming month.  I have a few articles planned out in the near future, one that's recap of the year and one that's a look ahead at next year.  However, I'm not quite finished with those, so in the mean time, I figured I would share some thoughts on the movies that really impacted my cinematic tastes.

Despite growing up with movies, I actually have a hard time coming up with one that I would consider my favorite.  This is a bit odd, as I can do this several of my other passions (anime, video games, music), but for some reason, trying to name a favorite movie or even come up with a Top 10 list, I struggle.  However, as I think back on my life, I know that there have been movies that I have become obsessed with or consider to be highlights in my movie-watching life, so here is a list of those movies instead.

Okay, it's another scrap, but at least it's far more recent than the old stuff that I had been posting before.  This time, it's a bit of a fantasy piece called The White Fox.  It's longer than any of the other scraps I have up around here.  Think of it as an introduction to something I may do more with in future.

A bunch of movie reviews!

I know that this site's purpose is to be a place for my fiction, but I had some movie reviews sitting on my hard drive not doing anything, so I figured I'd post them here.

The thing is, this set of reviews was actually part of a project.  You see, I like to watch (or re-watch) older films in a series to get up to speed for the new ones, and when a new Bond film was coming out at the end of 2015, I figured I would finally sit down and watch every Bond film up to that point.  I know there isn't much in the way of continuity for these things, but I had only seen a handful and figured it would be fun to finally watch them all.  I started about three months in advance and was able to watch them all in time, and it was quite fun!

I also started writing reviews for each one as I watched them, partially to provide content for a different personal site that never came together, but also as a kind of movie journal as I made my way through the series.  I was able to write up reviews for the first nine Bond films, but after that, I felt it was getting tedious and I just wanted to watch the movies.

I may come back to them and finish up the reviews, maybe for when the next Bond film comes out or something, but in the meantime, you can check them out on my Reviews section.  They're fairly short and punchy, so give them a look.

I have also decided to include a review of a more recent move, Jason Bourne.  I wasn't that impressed, but if you want a more thorough analysis, click here.

I think it is something I want to try and do for this site.  I'm regularly watching movies, so it makes sense to keep writing stuff for them.  I don't know if I'll do it for every film I see, but it gives me something to add to my site.

Anyways, it's a few more things for the site.  It's starting to fill out a little!

A bunch of old blog posts!

Yeah, I still remember this place.

A few weeks ago, I had the idea of going to my old blogs and transferring all of those posts to this site.  It may seem redundant as those blogs are still up, but the purpose of this site is to consolidate all of my writing to one place.

My first blog was The Anime Guidepost, a place for all of my anime and manga reviews. I started this way back in 2007 and while I could never keep a consistent schedule (the more things change...), I did eventually put up quite the collection of reviews.  It's interesting to see all of the gusto and fervor I had for doing that.

I attempted to start over with a similar blog called The Wandering Nerd.  The idea was to broaden out of anime and into all the things I'm interested in.  While, I never did get very far, I did have the realization that I tended to write essays on Reddit and thought I could convert those to articles.  It's still a good idea, I think, but I only ever did it once on that blog.

In any case, all of the articles I posted on those blogs are now available on the renamed Reviews, Criticism, and Old Blogs section.  You can take a look into my critical writing past, for whatever that's worth.

I also started a fiction blog called Warriors of the Red Van, telling the story of some adventurers in an "anything goes" kind of world.  I only ever wrote three chapters, but it's a world that I'm still interested in.  I may come back to it at some point, but for now, the chapters can been seen on my Scraps page.

I know that it's not the greatest of updates, basically posting a bunch of old content, but as I said before, I want to consolidate my writings to this site, and doing this is a big part of that.

I do intend to write more for this site, but for now, this all that I feel like I can do, for now.
