Anticipated Movies for 2019

Yup, it's that time again.  What's odd is that a handful of the movies I mentioned on last year's list got delayed, so if you see duplicates, that's why.  There actually is quite a bit to look forward to, though, so let's get started.

Glass

I admit that I haven't seen Split yet, but the idea that M. Night Shyamalan is making his own superhero universe based on Unbreakable has me pretty curious.  (Oh, and Samuel L. Jackson should be fun to watch as the villain.)

The Kid Who Would Be King

The trailer for this just barely dropped, but I knew about this one a while ago.  Patrick Stewart plays Merlin to a modern-day revival of the King Arthur mythos sounds like a decent premise.  It looks pretty campy, but a good kids' film can get away with that.

The Lego Move 2: The Second Part

While I have no idea what it's really going to be about, the trailers seem to promise more of the silliness that was present in the first one, and I'm on board for that.  Just the sheer idea that something like The Lego Movie even exists feels like a miracle, and that it's getting a sequel that looks just as good gets me pretty excited.

Alita: Battle Angel

James Cameron's promises are finally coming to fruition.  He wanted to make this movie ages ago, and the fact that it's finally coming to theaters is kind of amazing.  (It's a shame he has to squander it by making a bunch of Avatar sequels.)

I know people are bugged by the big eyes, but honestly, I'm okay with them, and the fact that it looks like an 80s gritty anime brought to life guarantees a ticket bought from me.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

The first two of this series are some pretty solid kids films that aren't afraid to go to some dark places, even if the deadpan humor does get a little dry sometimes.  Still, the idea that there are more surprises in store for a third film has me lightly optimistic.

Captain Marvel

While it may seem like just more time-wasting until we get the conclusion of Infinity War later this year, I admit that I'm excited for this movie for one reason: Phil Coulson is gonna be in it.  Yes, I know it takes place in the 90s, but I don't care.  Phil Coulson is awesome!

Shazam!

I'm still kind of on the fence about this one, but the action/comedy vibe does seem to show some potential.  While it may not be the return to glory for some classic comic book fans, there's a chance that Zachery Levi could turn this into something unique.

Hellboy

The first two Hellboy movies are classics as far as I'm concerned, and the fact that neither Del Toro nor Ron Pearlman were coming back for this one had me pretty bummed.  While I know it had Mignola more involved, a new Hellboy didn't seem promising.

And then I saw the trailer.  Wow, that looks fun.  And it doesn't seem like it's trying to rehash anything from the first two films, but really going nuts with some of the comic book's later material.  So I'm board with this one now.

Avengers: Infinity War

The movie no one wants to compete with.  This thing has been 10 years in the making, and this kind of cinema is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, much like the first Avengers was.  Here's hoping that the Russo Brothers, along with Feige, can bring it all together for the end.

John Wick 3: Parabellum

However, if there is one movie that I'm excited for, it's the return of John Wick.  The first two films were violent delights that took action cinematography and choreography seriously, resulting in some great actions films that didn't need shaky-cam garbage to be thrilling.  And given how the second one ended, I don't think Wick is anywhere near done, which is good news in my book!

Aladdin

I really haven't been on board with all of these Disney live-action adaptations (you'll notice Dumbo isn't on this list), but Aladdin is one of my personal favorites, and it's being directed by Guy Ritchie, which means this could be pretty different.  Also, Will Smith as The Genie has the potential to be a good idea.  Cautiously optimistic for this one.

Dark Phoenix

It's hard to look forward to an X-Men movie, given how the last few have turned out, but I can't deny I'm curious to see where this goes, especially now that the mutants will be return to Marvel under the Disney stables.  Then again, the last time they tried to tell this story, we got X3: The Last Stand.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

I'll admit that Homecoming left me kind of lukewarm, but I'm still curious to see what the MCU will be like after Thanos, so call this one a maybe.

The New Mutants

Supposedly the last Fox X-men film, delayed due to reshoots to make it more horror oriented.  Again, mildly curious, but not a high priority.

Artemis Fowl

I loved the first book of this young-adult novel series, and while later ones were varying degrees of okay, a movie adaptation has been lingering for years until now, as we finally see teasers.

To be honest, there are already some strange changes (Commander Root in particular), so it's a bit up in the air whether or not this will work.  Another one I'm cautiously optimistic for.

Gemini Man

Not much is known about this, but Ang Lee isn't an average director, and that he's doing a sci-fi thriller about cloning that includes Will Smith and Clive Owen does sound good on paper.  I'll have to see some trailers to really know, though.

Kingsman: The Great Game

The Kingsman movies have been a unique brand of irreverent fun, and while the second one wasn't quite as good as the first, it maintained enough of the first one's freshness and character to be worth my time.  So yeah, sign me up for more!

That being said, this one looks to be a prequel, revolving around the creation of the Kingsman organization, making this more of a period piece.  It will be curious to see how they take the Kingsman tone to the early 1900s for this one.

Well, that seems like enough for now.  And yes, I'm leaving off Star Wars 9 for now.  7 and 8 were disappointing enough, and with JJ Abrams returning for this one, I'm not holding my breath.

Still, plenty to look forward to this year!  We'll see how many of them I can get to.  Until then, let's not go another freaking year before I post something on this site, okay?
