Anticipated Movies for 2021!

Happy New Year!  Like I said earlier, this list won't differ much from last year's, as so many of these got delayed to this year, resulting in quite the stacked list.  Still, if things go well, it will be nice to see these in theaters.  If not, it seems many of these will be released simultaneously with various digital platforms.  In any case, here we go!

Outside the Wire

I know I said it would be nice to see films in theaters again, but as Netflix continues their quest to fill their service with original content, I'm gonna have to settle for some on the small screen.  This one is an action thriller where Anthony Mackie plays an android in the military.  It looks like it might be decent, as Mackie has been fun to watch as The Falcon in the MCU.

Chaos Walking

Here's one I didn't see coming at all.  A girl (Daisy Ridley) crash lands on a planet where all the women are dead and all the men (including Tom Holland and Mads Mikkelsen) have The Noise, something that displays their thoughts for everyone to see and hear.  From there, things seem to build into quite the sci-fi thriller.  Apparently based on a novel, this looks to be quite interesting.

Raya and the Last Dragon

While this did get delayed, I did see a trailer for this, and I do think it has potential.  It feels like a wild mix of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Black Panther, and How to Train Your Dragon.  At least it will be an original story, which becoming quite the rarity these days.

The King's Man

Prequel to the highly irreverent Kingsmen films, this still looks like it has potential to help the series get beyond its Bond-parody antics with a prequel set during World War I.  This one has had delays even before the lockdown, so I've been waiting for this one for a while now.

Morbius

I still don't know how I feel about Sony's spin-off Spider-man Universe they're planning, but I can't deny I'm curious about where this one goes, and how it connects.  Seeing Michael Keaton in the trailer only adds to the mystery at this point.

No Time to Die

James Bond films can at least be a guaranteed fun ride, if nothing else.  Trailers have made it clear this one looks to be quite a manic roller coaster.  This will likely be Daniel Craig's last round with the role, so we'll see what they have in store for that, along with it being the 25th film in the franchise.

Mortal Kombat

I admit I've never been the biggest MK fan.  I haven't played the games much, and I never did see the older movies.  However, after watching a few video game tournaments, I can understand the 90s comic book appeal the franchise has, and giving it a big budget blockbuster could break this one pretty big.

The Asset

Not much to go off for this one, other than it's an action-thriller with Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Martin Campbell, who did Goldeneye, Casino Royale, and The Foreigner.  Of course, the last time I saw Keaton in an action thriller, it was the very disappointing American Assassin, so I'll retain some caution on this one.

Black Widow

While I've been kind of "meh" on following up with the MCU after Phase 3, I can't deny the trailers for this have me a little excited.  It looks pretty fun, and we might get David Harbour in a good superhero movie this time.

Godzilla vs. Kong

Another "roller coaster," I can't deny Legendary seems to have a pretty solid grasp on how these movies should work, if the last one is anything to go by.

F9

After doing my Fast and Furious retrospective, I also can't deny that I'm anticipating another round of this stupid action series.  Trailers proved there was more ridiculous boundaries that could be crossed, so here's hoping they haven't gone too far.

Infinite

Again, not much is known about this one since last year, other than it's Antione Fuqua doing time-bending sci-fi.  I'll need to see a trailer or two to decide, but it's on the list for now.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

If I'm curious about the Mobius movie, then I guess I can't argue against putting the Venom sequel on the list as well.  I didn't see the first one, but I understand it was alright, if you didn't have high expectations.  Still, Tom Hardy is a great actor, so maybe he can save this from being a complete disaster.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Of all the upcoming MCU films that I am excited for, it's this one.  I'm always down for fun martial arts films, and it will be curious to see how Marvel handles it, especially after the underwhelming live-action Mulan Disney put out last year.

Uncharted

Another one that I'm still on the fence about.  While Indiana Jones vibe should be fun, the idea of Tom Holland in the part does still feel iffy.  And the fact that they didn't just go and get Nathan Fillion depresses me, especially after that fan film got made.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

The mere fact that they're even doing a new Space Jam just kinda hurts my brain, but my curiosity compels me to at least see what they're doing.  It will be hard to know how such a relic of the 90s can be anything more than casual kids' movie these days.

The Tomorrow War

Another big sci-fi epic that I don't know much about, other than it has Chris Pratt and J.K. Simmons.  The idea of bringing soldiers from the past to fight an alien invasion in the future is somewhat promising, though.

The Green Knight

Epic medieval fantasy doesn't seem to get much attention from Hollywood these days, so the idea of a new film based on the Arthurian legend will be curious to see.

The Suicide Squad

While the last time we saw this title in the DC Extended Universe, we got a really flat, messy movie.  However, with James Gunn in the director's chair, there's potential for this one to work.  Bringing in Idris Elba certainly doesn't hurt either.

Death on the Nile

The sequel to the amazing Murder on the Orient Express, I'm pretty stoked to see Kenneth Branagh take on another Poirot mystery.  And it has French and Saunders!

Dune

This is the movie I'm most excited for, by far.  Adapting the first half of the iconic sci-fi novel, Denis Villeneuve is bringing his iconic, well-paced visuals for this movie, and I can hardly wait.  Using Pink Floyd in the trailer music was a nice touch as well.

The Last Duel

This one is a curious historical drama about duels in medieval England.  With Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Adam Driver, and Ridley Scott in the director's chair, it certainly won't be boring.

The Eternals

Probably the biggest question surrounding the future of the MCU.  While teases have been made across the year, I need to see a trailer to decide how I feel about this one.

Mission: Impossible 7

While the last one was a bit of a slog, and a little too over-the-top for its own good, this is another franchise where I feel too invested to completely give up.  Not that the MI films have much in the way of continuity, but the last one certainly tried to bring things together, so it will be curious how they plan to go forward.  I mean, Tom Cruise can't run forever, can he?

MCU Spider-man 3

Can you believe the MCU has four films scheduled for this year?  Anyways, we don't have an official title for this one, but it's already looking to be pretty nuts, as they're planning on bringing together characters from both the Sam Raimi films and the Marc Webb films, probably building off the success of Into the Spider-Verse.  I anticipate that this will be completely bonkers.

The Matrix 4

While my beloved John Wick had his fourth installment delayed to 2022, we'll at least be able to see Keanu Reeves in a Matrix sequel that I don't think anyone was asking for.  And given that Carrie-Anne Moss is going to be in it as well shows that we don't even know how this fits canonically.  Again, cautiously curious about this one.

Well, that's quite the list.  We'll see if I get to any of these in the upcoming year, but it's pretty clear to see it will be quite the year, one way or another.  I didn't watch very many movies in 2020 (even older ones), but this looks like it will be a busy year for me.  Plenty to write about, at the very least.
